Poppy the Engage Academy Dog

These are a few of the many reasons why we decided to get a school dog:

Dogs teach children responsibility.

Having to remember to feed, provide water and show support for a dog can give children a sense of importance and satisfaction that they can’t get from school or other chores.  The relationship that develops can be life-changing for a child and a great support system as they themselves continue to grow and develop.

Dogs teach children patience.

Dogs do not always do as they are told first time! Dogs teach children compassion.  Just like humans, dogs feel emotion and pain.  They are prone to injuries and the infirmities of age during their relatively short lives.

Dogs teach children about socialisation.

Like most of us, dogs are social animals who enjoy and need attention and affection.  By learning how to interact with a dog, children can learn how to better socialise with other children.

Dogs are fun.

Last, but certainly not least, dogs are a lot of fun.  They greet you with a wagging tail every day and can cheer you up even on your worst day.

About Poppy

The Engage Academy dog, Poppy, lives with the Deputy Head Teacher and has been coming into school for six years now.  Poppy is a very caring, friendly dog with a brilliant temperament and has become a real asset to school.

Poppy’s mother is a full pedigree chocolate Labrador and her father is a full pedigree black Labrador.  Both her mother and father come from a long line of champion show dogs and this can be seen on her Kennel Club Five Generation Pedigree Certificate.

Poppy is a member of PetPlan which means that she is insured if she was to get hurt or ill and she has public liability insurance enabling her to come into school.  Poppy regularly visits the vet for checkups, worm and flea treatments and vaccinations.

As a puppy, Poppy completed training with The Clever Dog Company giving both us and her the training we needed to ensure that Poppy could behave well in school.  Pupils enjoy taking her for walks, playing with her at playtime and showing her their work.  She loves it when pupils come into the office to sit and stroke her or show her their work and sometimes she even listens to them read.
