Pupils’ maths skills are assessed within the first four weeks of arrival through teacher assessment. Maths is taught across the school using the White Rose Mixed Age Schemes and Steps of Learning, adapted to best fit the main cohort in each class. Individual pupils receive targeted interventions where needed, using a range of appropriate schemes.
Pupils are taught using the concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach, ensuring they are confident at each stage before moving on. They are encouraged to use visual models and representations, written methods and mathematical vocabulary to explain their answers, demonstrating their thinking and understanding. Pupils are encouraged to work independently and challenge themselves to move towards abstract thinking when they feel ready.
All pupils participate in daily maths lessons, which follow a four-part model: recall of mathematical facts, arithmetic, review and consolidation of previous learning, and the introduction of new learning. Lessons are practical in nature and provide hands-on learning experiences.
The style of maths lessons varies between classes depending on the age and needs of the pupils, with much mathematical learning incorporated into the continuous and creative curriculum. Mathematical vocabulary is embedded across other areas of the curriculum, including weekly cooking lessons and activities such as den building, measuring and directional work within the outdoor areas (including the forest area). A variety of maths interventions are also used to support pupils who find some concepts difficult to grasp.
In some classes, maths skills are further consolidated through play within the continuous provision. Pupils also have access to a range of online programmes to practise mental maths skills, such as number bonds and multiplication facts.
